The ‘Big Show’ Returns

Click to see original imageThe big show comes back to Utah County this week after 34 years. lt’s the Utah County Fair, 1976 edition – and from advance reports, it’ll be something every family will want to attend if possible. There are three big days Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The scene will be different than in the “old days” of the fair. Instead of the erstwhile “fairgrounds” at Provo (now non-existant). the livestock coliseum and rodeo grounds area plus nearby school facilities. “See the Bounty of Utah County” is the theme being promoted by the fair board which functions under the direction of the county commission. Kent Prestwich heads the ambitious board which has mobilized a small army of men, women and youth in the county to put together the exhibits and shows. “Bounty” is a good word to describe the exhibits and displays because Utah County still ranks No. 1 among counties of the state in agricultural production with a fine variety of crops to show off. Moreover, its industrial might has grown tremendously since the last fair was held, making for some fine industry exhibits. Exhibitors will show off the full range of goods expected at a county fair farm products, including grains, com, beets, garden vegetables, etc.; horticulture showing the valley’s capability in fruit growing; flowers of numerous kinds; fine arts in abundance; home arts that will include canning, needle work, clothing, jellies and jams, baked goods, candy, cookies, etc. Don’t forget the livestock, with FFA and 4-l-l exhibitors – and the fat animal sale the final day of the fair. Entertainment will feature such events as the Utah County beauty pageant, the Farm Bureau “talent find,” music contest, horse show, dog show, rodeo, the latter Friday and Saturday. Carnival and concessions will tie it all together and add the festive touch. Preparations are going forward, with feverish activity at the county fair location in Spanish Fork. People are preparing some interesting things for you to see. There’s talk of establishing a permanent county fair headquarters for future years. Meantime, don’t miss the 1976 “revival” edition of the big show. It just could be a “blue ribbon” winner!
