Deurth of Bicycle Racks?

Click to see original imageA Herald reader has written to express a need for more bicycle racks in Provo. “I have found it a great problem to find a safeplace to secure my bike when I am’ shopping or in the downtown area,” the citizen wrote. “There are a few places, such as on Center Street and one that 1 have noticed on University Avenue and about 200 North, in which there are bike racks provided to safely secure a bike. Even the place where I am employed doesn’t want our bicycles parked anywhere near the building. Where are we supposed to park them where they will be safe?” Obviously more and more people are riding bicycles and the trend is likely to continue. While we have noticed a number of bike racks in the business areas, it is quite likely the reader has a very legitimate point. As a community, we are concerned with providing parking spaces for cars. Why not give more attention to safe places for bicycles? More racks to which a bike can be secured undoubtedly would reduce bike thefts, incidentally, The Herald suggests that the appropriate officials name a study team to assess the bike rack situation and come up with recommendations – including the need and who should provide the facilities. Bicycle racks may not be one of the city’s most pressing problems. But giving consideration for the folks who do need the service is one of the little things that help make a community a good place in which to live.
