Irrigation officials have reviewed the quantities of water available and the watering schedules on Provo City’s 83 miles of ditches and concluded there’s considerable water available for subscription. A few ditches have fully subscribed watering schedules, but on most others there is water available. This is good news to new ‘green – thumbers who would ‘ ”e to be part of the upsurge gardening interest. Actually there was a fair sized revival in gardening last year, according to irrigation department records. In 1973 the irrigation department had 1497 people renting water from the city, but the list increased dramatically to 1856 in 1974. Persons interested in having irrigation water this year should contact the city’s senior watermaster, Terry Herbert at the utilities department. Don’t wait too ong, since the process of setting up schedules and ditch turns is under way. The fee for irrigation water is reasonably priced. Experienced gardeners will know about such things as soils, how often to irrigate, fertilizers, types of vegetables to plant, length of growing season, pesticides to use, the need for the garden to be in a sunny place, planting times, etc. But if you’re a novice, we suggest you start planning now – not only to sign up for the water if it’s available, but to seek expert advice so that your investment of time and money will really pay off. Gardening can be fun, challenging, and healthful, but as in so many other things, success or failure can depend upon your own diligence and expertise.
