‘More Blessed to Give…’

Click to see original imageChristmas memories may be fading – but there’s a special memory that ought to linger because it stands for heart-warming generosity and consideration for persons in need. We’re referring to the Subfor-Santa program in Utah Valley which had a good year under direction of the Division of Family Services, State Department of Social Services. According to a report by Don Lankford of the DFS, who coordinated the Sub-for-Santa effort, Christmas toys, food. and clothing were provided for 1900 children from 501 famililes – an increase of 268 children in 93 families over last year. The Sulrfor-Santa program, as it functions today under the guidance of the Division of Family Services, is an outgrowth or extension of the annual Daily Herald – Provo Firemen program which functioned for many years, coordinating the efforts of donors in seeing that youngsters from needy families were not forgotten by Santa. The Division of Family Services (formerly the welfare department) has played a broadening role in re cent years and now spearheads the program with Herald cooperation on the publicity. Twenty-six organizations and a large number of individuals stepped forward this year to serve as Santa subs. In 84 instances, needy families were furnished yule goodies by other families. Fifty-six families were assisted by more than one donor or organization. Bishops, pastors, students, generous individuals, clubs, church groups, organizations – help came from these and other sources. The No. 1 Santa sub was the Elks Lodge. In the Sub-forSanta effort and through its own program of Christmas charity the Elks expended more than $8000, assisting 226 adults and 510 children in 158 families with clothing, toys and food baskets. in addition, the Elks helped 12 boys at a boys home with athletic equipment and personal items, gave turkeys to 35 families, assisted at the rehabilitation center, and remembered 93 widows of lodge members. Brigham Young University student organizations branches, clubs, roommates, etc. – assisted 76 families for the second biggest Santa sub endeavor. And the list goes on. Everyone cannot be mentioned, but altogether the Subfor-Santa progam amounted to a great outpouring of goodness and generosity in the valley. Each donor was appreciated, no matter how little the contribution. Congratulations to all who helped in any way, To these people belongs the gratitude of many…and we trust also they know the inner warmth of proving again that it’s “more blessed to give than to receive.”
