A great deal of charm has been added to Provo’s downtown Christmas decorations by the lighting of the newly-installed trees at mid-Center street in front of the city center.

The motorists cruising along a busy street – such as Provo’s Center during rush-hour – can create quite a nuisance by stopping to wait for a car to back out of a parking stall.

Sometimes the person about to leave the stall takes longer than expected and traffic backs up. The other day we observed such a condition on Center in front of Woolworth’s. While a motorists waited to get the about-to-be-vacated parking spot, traffic backed up to First West and around the comer on First West south of Center.

The courteous and considerate driver will move along and not inconvenience others hy waiting for a stall if this is going to hold up traffic.

The Utah County Community Services Agency drive for toys for children in needy families seems an excellent yule project, worthy of support. We suggest you check news accounts or Patricia Robinson’s letter on Page 11 of Monday’s Herald, then do what you can to help “put a smile on the face of a youngster” in the holiday season.

In an application of the principle of separating church and state, we suggest mass meetings on community matters not to be held in chapels of any church. For example, holding a public meeting in one church’s chapel to discuss the issue of swimming on Sunday might tend to put a person of another church, who may have views opposite the prevailing ones, on the spot. There’s merit, we feel, to holding such meetings in schools, private homes, government offices, etc.

Is there a law that prohibits trucks hauling earth, rocks, and other materials to or from a construction site to insure that the material won’t spill over on the road? If so, it ought to be observed and enforced; if not, various local government units ought to consider passing such a law. Mud and rocks, spilling from a truck, certainly can roughen the surface of a street and inconvenience others.
