A call for withdrawal of “foreign forces” from Afghanistan and demands that the Afghan people be allowed to determine their own destiny free from outside interference highlighted a declaration concluding the four-day meet. The declaration appealed for a political settlement in Afghanistan based on respect l or the sovereignty. territorial integrity and non-aligned status of the country. The document did not name the Soviet Union which western governments say has an estimated 85.000 troops in Afghanistan, but the meaning with reference to the USSR was clear. The conference marked the 20th anniversary of establishment of the 96nation non-aligned movement. one of whose founders was independent India’s first prime minister. Jawaharlal Nehru. While approaches and ideologies may differ among the various countries. some messages emanated from the New Delhi conference which all should heed. including an urgent appeal that all nations of the world “work eamestly to avoid war and consolidate international peace and security.”
