There’s a great deal of merit in the Utah County Commission’s proposal to develop a park and picnic area in connection with the historic Nunn’s property in Provo Canyon, The commissioners are discussing a suggested lease agreement with Utah Power and Light Company, owner of the property. They are interested in apgroximately 10 acres which they elieve will lend themselves to the park development. A significant phase of the project would be restoration of the Nunn plant building, symbolic of a significant pioneer-era milestone in electrical power generation and transmission. Provo histories recount that the Telluride Power Company of Colorado constructed the Nunn’s Station in Provo Canyon in 1899. Quoting J .M. Jensen’s HISTORY OF PROVO: “The first 40 KV line in the world was constructed and operated successfully between this plant and Mercur, a gold mining camp (northerly from Fairfield) now abandoned. In due time lines were extended to Bingham and Eureka. This expansion made it possible to furnish wholesale gergy to the towns mentionDavid Nielsen, representative of UP&L, agreed with the commissioners that the restored Nunn Station should be used as a museum and indicated some old power generating e ui ment might be placed in theiiuigding. it is understood that state highway officials designing road improvement through Provo Canyon plan not to disturb the Nunn gistoric site, This is as it should e. One item in the park development envisioned by the county is a footpath from Nunn’s to nearby Canyon Glen, trying two units together. The Herald encourages the county and UP&L to finalize their lease agreement as early as possible so that specific planning for the canyon park-picnic-museum area can get under way.
