Our Tourist Attractions

Click to see original imageCentral Utah has a fair-sized roster of tourist attractions. A partial list could include such scenic features as Mt. Timpanogos, Mt. Nebo, the Alpine and Nebo loop roads and other canyon drives ; Utah Lake and Deer Creek and Strawberry Reservoirs together with other bodies of water and scenic rivers ; a number of canyons, including such attractions as Bridal Veil Falls, Sundance, and the Heber Creeper. in Utah Valley itself, some of the industrial, cultural, and recreational features are Brigham Young University, Geneva Steel, the Springville Art Gallery, the Hutchings Museum at Lehi, Provo Pioneer Museum, and such state parks as Wasatch Mountain near Midway, Yuba Dam near Levan, and the Utah Lake State Park at Provo. A future attraction is sure to be t.he Osmond Brothers studios being built at Orem. Visitors already are asking about it. Our main purpose in this editorial is to spotlight a local attraction with national designation – the Timpanogos Cave National Monument – now open for the summer, and worthy of a visit whether you’re a local resident or a visiting tourist. Timp Cave, a subterranean cavem high on the shoulder of Timpanogos, is accessible from American Fork Canyon via a 1’/:mile winding trail that ascends the mountain from a visitor’s center at the canyon floor. Nearly 75,000 visitors took tours through the cave last year, and national park rangers expect that figure might well be approached or topped this season despite a late start. The opening was delayed until June 25 due to a construction project – shelter built at the cave exit and a rock fail barrier in the drainage above the entrance. The cave will be every day of the week/through l..abor Day. Q Within the cave are staiagmites and stalactites of rare beauty, including such specially – labeled features as the “Great Heart of Timpanogos.” Tours operate from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Advance reservations are required for groups numbering 10 or more. Pets and wheeled vehicles, including strollers, are not permitted on the steep trail, which rises 1065 feet above the canyon floor. Without doubt, Timpanogos Cave is a valued feature and tourist attraction that should not be overlooked by Central Utahns looking for a pleasant recreational and educational experience. So They Suy Courage is what you find lacking in most people because courage is constantly limited by fear, and fear is possessed by most people and possibly by all people. – David Sarnoff, American electronics engineer. In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility. – Eleanor Roosevelt. Humility leads to strength and not to weakness. It is the highest form of self-respect to admit mistakes and to make amends for them. – John J. McCloy, American diplomat. “We are moving from a ‘cowboy’ economy where there was always a new frontier and plenty of everything for the taking, plus a vast land to swallow ur whatever was no logger usefu, into a ‘spaceman’ m e in which resources are limited. How these are used, reused and disposed of must be carefully planned.” -Walter J. Neppl, president of J.C. Penney Co., in a recent interview.
