\nCommerce Aviation Committee
\nwill honor Mike Jense Friday as a
\nprelude to Aviation Day at the
\nairport Saturday.
\nDesignation of “Mike Jense
\nDay” provides a fitting recogni-
\ntion for a man who has been at the
\nforefront in aviation here<\/a> for so
\nmany years parque hinchable<\/a>.
\nMike. founder of the Central
\nUtah Aviation whose active
\ninterest in flying dates back some
\nfour decades, modestly would
\nshare the honor with others who
\nhave helped pioneer aviation in
\nthe valley.
\nIndeed, without taking anything
\naway from his contribution, many
\nfliers have had a hand in the step-
\nby-step development of airports
\nand aviation in the area and in
\npopularizing flying.
\nVeteran Herald staffers well –
\nremember Charley Corbell, a
\nProvo flier back in the thirties.
\nHis flight pioneering ended
\ntragically when he and his wife
\nand Leonard Thatcher were killed
\nin a fatal crash Jan. 22, 1939 when
\nthe Provo Airport was located in
\nthe southeast part of the city near
\nthe golf course.
\nMike Jense had a plane based
\nhere even in those days.
\nEarlier, back in the 20s, Vern
\nCarter of Lake Shore was flying in
\nthis area. (So was Milo Morrell.
\nAnother of the early fliers was
\nElmer Smith. Delles Nilsen
\nsoloed in 1926, and was associated
\nclosely with Mr. Carter for a
\ntime.
\nThe contribution of Merrill
\nChristopherson and his wife
\nLucille who became pilots and
\noperated the Provo Flying
\nService would fill a large chapter
\nin any aviation history of Provo.
\nThey are still actively engaged in
\nthe flight service business.
\nRalph Woodhouse and Eldon
\nCarter, who started the Spanish
\nFork Airport, Willis Madsen and
\nundoubtedly, many others had a
\nhand in popularizing aviation in
\nthe valley.
\nSo Mike Jense is right when he
\nsays there are ”a lot of guys” who
\ndeserve honors for what they have
\ndone for aviation.
\nMr. Jense long has been known
\nas a skilled pilot, flight instructor,
\nand hneinassman -;a nmfessinnal
\nin his field. Among
\naccomplishments at the Provo
\nAirport in which he has had a
\nhand are the installation of an
\ninstrument landing system and
\nbeefing up of the main runway so
\nthat the heavier jet aircraft of
\ntoday can be accommodated.
\n(Planes ranging up to the Boeing
\n727 can now land here.)
\nThere are still vital needs –
\nadditional electronic equipment,
\nmore adequate roads, better fire
\nprotection, sewer system, etc.
\nMen like Mr. Jense, together with
\ncity officials, with the
\nencouragement of the C. of C.
\ncommittee and others. will
\ncontinue to work for these – and
\nthe entire community will benefit.
\nMr. Jense sees the Provo
\nAirports future in becoming a
\n“general aviation airport,” not an
\nairline stop. Some 160,000 general
\naviation and business aircraft are
\nnow operated in . the country,
\ncompared with about 3000 airline
\nplanes. –
\nThe Herald joins in
\ncongratulating Mr. Jense on his
\ncontribution to aviation in Utah
\nand this area, and the Chamber of
\nCommerce committee for
\nhonoring him in conjunction with
\nAviation Day. Indeed this is a
\ngood time to say thanks to all
\nthose who have pioneered aviation
\nin the region.
