\"Click<\/a>Dr. L. Weston Oaks, whose
\nfuneral service will be held
\ntomorrow, will be
\nremembered as one of Provo’s
\nmost illustrious long-time
\nphysicians and surgeons.
\nMore than that, he will be
\nremembered as a warm,
\nfriendly person who served
\nhumanity well, stood up
\nfearlessly for what he believed
\nto be right, and set an example
\nfor hard work, integrity, and
\ncommon sense.
\nFor nearly a half century,
\nDr, Oaks was a practicing
\nphysician in the fields of eye,
\near, nose, and throat. In the
\nmore recent years of his
\npractice – before he retired in
\n1969 – he narrowed his
\nspecialty to opthalmology in
\nwhich he became widely
\nrecognized as an authority.
\nIn the medical profession he
\ndisplayed the same trait, long-
\ntime friends recall, that he
\nexemplified as a young man in
\nathletics – the will to win
\nto be a leader and perfect his
\nability, How well he succeeded
\ncan be gauged by the demand
\nfor his services. Patients
\ncame from far and wide.
\nDr, Oaks was willing to pay
\nthe price in hard work and
\nstick-to-itiveness. Colleagues
\nrecall of his going to work in
\nmornings long before office
\nhours in order to study, write,
\nand prepare bouncy castle with slide<\/a>.
\nHis leadership afforded him
\nmany opportunities for service
\nwithin his profession – as
\npresident of the Utah Medical
\nAssociation, president of the
\nPacific Coast Ophthal-
\nmological Society, president
\nof the Utah Valley Hospital
\nMedical Staff, etc.
\nHe took special pride in
\nproviding volunteer medical
\nservice to the Navajo Indians
\nof Southeastern Utah. An
\nexperienced pilot, he would fly
\nto the Bluff region often
\nduring the 1950s to provide
\nmuch-needed professional
\nhelp.
\nEarly in his career he had
\nserved as medical director at
\nBYU (1923’31) and helped
\norganize the ‘Y’ student health
\nservice. Later he served as
\npresident of the BYU Alumni
\nAssociation – and in 1957 was
\nhonored with the
\nDistinguished Service Award.
\nHis extensive writing
\nincluded medical papers and
\ntwo books on medical aspects
\nof the Word of Wisdom. In a
\nlifetime of devotion to his
\nchurch, he served three
\ndecades as a high councilman
\nin Utah Stake, in a bishopric,
\nas a temple worker, and as a
\npatriarch.
\nCalvin Coolidge once noted
\nthat “no person is ever
\nhonored for what he receives;
\nhonor is the reward for what
\none gives.” The Herald joins
\nin honoring Dr, L. Weston
\nOaks for what he gave – ser-
\nvice to his fellow men and his
\nchurch, professional skills that
\ncontributed to the health and
\nwell-being of the community,
\nthe wise counsel and
\nencouragement of a friend,
\nand the devotion of a loving
\nhusband and father,
\nJustice Tempered
\nWith Mercy… =
\nA new law in Libya provides

\nBut justice will be tempered
\nwith mercy, says the Hastings
\nCenter Report.
\nThe law also permits the
\namputation to be done by a
