\"Click<\/a>This is the year of the
\n municipal elections.
\n Here in Utah, the citizens of
\n each city and town will go to
\n the polls Nov. 6 to elect the
\n officials who will direct local
\n affairs in the various
\n commimities.
\n Just because the municipal
\n elections are not accompanied
\n by the fanfare of a national
\n vote should not be interpreted
\n as meaning they’re not
\n important.
\n Indeed they are vitally im-
\n portant. Mayors,
\n commissioners, councilmen,
\n town board members – city
\n officials by whatever title –
\n are charged with making
\n decisions which vitally affect
\n your daily life.
\n For example: They set the
\n local tax levy, have the
\n responsibility for police and
\n fire protection, decide on
\n street and water projects, act
\n on local laws and ordinances,
\n and have the authority to
\n make many other decisions
\n affecting the community and
\n its people.
\n lt’s important, therefore,
\n that good men and women be
\n elected. With the filing
\n deadline only weeks away, it’s
\n urgent now that qualified
\n persons be urged to run for of-
\n fice.
\n In Provo, the offices of
\n mayor and one city com-
\n missioner will be filled this
\n year for four – year terms.
\n These posts are now held by
\n Mayor Verl G. Dixon and
\n Commissioner Ray Murdock,
\n both of whom have indicated
\n they will not seek re-election.
\n Thus far, two candidates for
\n mayor are in tl1e race – John
\n Manning and A1 Molling. One
\n candidate has announced for
\n commissioner, E. Odell
\n Miner.
\n In Provo, the filing deadline
\n is Oct. 1 – just three weeks
\n away. That doesn’t leave a lot
\n of time. If there are more than
\n two candidates in any one
\n office, Provo will hold a
\n primary election Oct. 23.
\n For third class cities –
\n which will elect a mayor and
\n two councilmen this year –
\n the filing period is between
\n Oct. 9 and Oct. 19. The smaller
\n communities in the “town”
\n category will elect a president
\n of the town board and two
\n trustees.
\n In the third class cities and
\n towns, nominations usually
\n are made on a party basis at
\n party conventions. Individual
\n citizens not chosen on a party
\n ballot may seek election by
\n filing a nominating petition
\n with the required number of
\n signatures.
\n The time is getting late.
\n Now is the hour for thought
\n and action in order to make
\n the municipal elections
\n successful and insure election
\n of qualified persons to all
