{"id":1171,"date":"1975-02-20T18:08:43","date_gmt":"1975-02-21T01:08:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gashler.com\/nlc\/?p=1171"},"modified":"2015-01-18T18:08:52","modified_gmt":"2015-01-19T01:08:52","slug":"tux-trend-still-upward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gashler.com\/nlc\/?p=1171","title":{"rendered":"Tax Trend: Still Upward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gashler.com\/nlc\/scans\/Editorials_1971-1975\/Editorial_070.jpg\"><img style=\"margin: 12px;\" src=\"http:\/\/gashler.com\/nlc\/default_thm.jpg\" alt=\"Click to see original image\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>The property tax continues\u00a0to rise in America despite\u00a0demands for property tax\u00a0relief and revenue sharing efforts to ease spending\u00a0pressures on the tax.<\/p>\n<p>Property tax collections in\u00a01974 will total close to $51\u00a0billion when the final figures\u00a0are in, more than twice the\u00a0nation-wide total only eight\u00a0years ago, according to Tax\u00a0Foundation Inc., based in New\u00a0York.<\/p>\n<p>Property taxes, which vary\u00a0considerably within as well as\u00a0among states, averaged $118\u00a0per resident nationally in\u00a0fiscal year 1965 when collections totaled $23.9 billion. In\u00a0fiscal year 1973 the per capital\u00a0average was $216 and the total, $47.2 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Utah currently has no state property tax, the 1.60 mills being levied in 1973 having been eliminated in 1964. Other taxing units &#8211; cities, counties, school districts, and special taxing units, of course, have property tax levies.<\/p>\n<p>Highest average property taxes per capita in 1973 were in Massachusetts, $358; Connecticut, $3534; California and New Jersey, $348; and New York, $320.<\/p>\n<p>Lowest states were Alabama, $46; Kentucky, $78; Arkansas and Louisiana, $79; and West Virginia, $83. Utah&#8217;s per capita property tax in 1973 was $146, compared with $110 in 1965. (the figures are taken by the Tax Foundation from its forthcoming 18th edition of Facts and Figures on Government Finance.)<\/p>\n<p>Through the years the property tax has been a stand-by tax and usually at least three units of government (and sometimes more) tax the same property.<\/p>\n<p>Utah is to be commended for moving to abolish its former state levy on property. It is urged that all units hold the line insofar as possible. While generally considered a &#8220;mainstay of local government finance,&#8221; the property tax also has received the label of &#8220;most disliked tax&#8221; in polls and certainly doesn&#8217;t encourage home ownership and improvement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The property tax continues\u00a0to rise in America despite\u00a0demands for property tax\u00a0relief and revenue sharing efforts to ease spending\u00a0pressures on the tax.
