\n and the colder temperatures
\n have amounted to a sharp
\n change from the football –
\n type weather of the past
\n several weeks in Central
\n Utah,
\n This should serve notice to
\n motorists that driving
\n habits need to change with
\n the season.
\n Wet, snow-covered and
\n even icy streets and
\n highways tax driving skills
\n and judgment, too.
\n We saw a fellow driving
\n up Center Street late
\n Monday with the
\n accumulation of Sunday
\n night’s snow still plastered
\n over his rear window, How
\n could he see through the
\n interior rear vision mirror?
\n To clean windsbields and
\n windows, including the rear
\n window, should be a must
\n when either snow or frost
\n have clouded or covered
\n them.
\n Safety engineers of
\n Firestone Tire and Rubber
\n Company have developed a
\n set of niles which, when
\n followed, will make winter
\n driving easier and safer.
\n They include:
\n – Skill at the wheel can
\n help. In starting on snow or
\n ice, don’t acce erate. Start
\n gently in either “drive”
\n range or in second gear,
\n making sure your front
\n wheels are pointing straight
\n ahead.
\n – Don’t make sudden
\n changes in direction if you
\n suspect the roadway is
\n slippery. Make smooth,
\n gradual changes, being
\n careful not to oversteer.
\n – Watch for “tem-
\n perature traps,” spots
\n along a cleared highway
\n where water might have
\n flowed over it and frozen.
\n Remember, too, bridge
\n surfaces freeze before the
\n roadway. Bridges can be
\n treacherous.
\n – When stopping, pump
\n the brake pedal gently. A
\n sudden jam on the pedal
\n might send your car into a
\n skid.
\n – Check your tires. The
\n driver with the smooth,
\n “bald” tires is asking for
\n trouble, Make sure your
\n tires have a fair amount of
\n tread showing before you
\n risk a winter drive.
\n – It helps to equip your
\n car with winter – tread tires.
\n Studies show the auto with
\n snow tires moves over snow
\n – covered highways 51 per
\n cent better than the car with
\n regular tires, and the snow-
\n tired vehicle also has 28 per
\n cent better traction on ice
\n than the car with regular
\n treads according to the
\n National Safety Council.
\n – Don’t fall for the
\n fallacy that under – inflated
\n tires give you better snow
\n traction, say the Firestone
\n engineers. Your tires should
\n be properly inflated at all
\n times.
\n You can augment this list
\n with your own winter – time
\n rules, Indeed, yours and
\n other lives may depend upon
\n how well you practice the
\n accepted recommendations.
