The Saints of 1847<br \/>\n and succeeding years made<br \/>\n the “desert blossom as a<br \/>\n rose.” but succeeding<br \/>\n generations have added<br \/>\n industry, expanded education,<br \/>\n and progress on some fronts<br \/>\n the pioneers perhaps could not<br \/>\n laveforr-seen,<br \/>\n liue there are things to be<br \/>\n dune – pollution to tame.<br \/>\n poverty to deal with. buildings<br \/>\n to build. payrolls to develop.<br \/>\n cultural activites to promote.<br \/>\n Bit generally Utah can look<br \/>\n back on over a century and a<br \/>\n quarter of satisfying growth<br \/>\n andprogress. ”<br \/>\n Perhaps unlike any other<br \/>\n state. Utah was founded as a<br \/>\n spiritual empire. with religion<br \/>\n as the prime motive. Others<br \/>\n went on to California to find<br \/>\n wealth in gold and land but<br \/>\n generally the Mormons stayed<br \/>\n with the soil in Utah Territory<br \/>\n and the wisdom of this has<br \/>\n beenevident.<br \/>\n Utahis own holiday –<br \/>\n Honeer Day. the 24th of July<br \/>\n – mas being commemorated<br \/>\n in lively fashion today. with<br \/>\n the “Days of ’47” celebration<br \/>\n at Salt lake City. Tributes<br \/>\n were paid the pioneers.<br \/>\n Throughout each<br \/>\n commermration is woven the<br \/>\n significance of the 24th of July<br \/>\n – the day in 1847 when<br \/>\n Brigiam Young and his party<br \/>\n arrived in Great Salt Lake<br \/>\n Valley, following the advance<br \/>\n ard main units of the first<br \/>\n picneer company into the<br \/>\n valley.<br \/>\n Vlhth a whole parade of<br \/>\n wagon trains arriving in<br \/>\n succeeding years, Brigham’s<br \/>\n ooloniration policy was put<br \/>\n into effect and colonies fanned<br \/>\n out through the state,<br \/>\n establishing settlements<br \/>\n ‘lhe first colony of settlers of<br \/>\n the Provo area arriveed on the<br \/>\n banlm of the river April 1, 1849<br \/>\n and two days later started<br \/>\n building a fort for protection<br \/>\n against the Indians. Other<br \/>\n settlements were established<br \/>\n quickly across the valley.<br \/>\n Fort Utah at Provo. first<br \/>\n located just south of the river<br \/>\n at some point in the vicinity of<br \/>\n the Geneva Road. was moved<br \/>\n a year later to the<br \/>\n approximate location of<br \/>\n today’s North Pa rk.<br \/>\n ‘lhat was the beginning.<br \/>\n Today. the cities of the area<br \/>\n are bustling with progress<br \/>\n Continued growth and<br \/>\n expansion is forecast.<br \/>\n It’s a far cry. all right. from<br \/>\n t.he beautiful though desolate<br \/>\n area the pioneers found. Who<br \/>\n can say exactly what kind of<br \/>\n ciues the pioneers of 1847 and<br \/>\n 1849 envisioned?
