\"Click<\/a>The mothers we honor this
\n day have earned their
\n places through service and
\n sacrifice and years of
\n devotion.
\n The biological process of
\n reproduction is the same for
\n all women but it takes a
\n good deal more to be
\n initiated into that noble
\n sorority of motherhood.
\n it lakes a combination of
\n qualities – some which may
\n be natural or instinctive and
\n others which may require
\n . thoughtful development.
\n On bringing that insecure
\n creature home from the
\n hospital, a mother is
\n required to take care of it.
\n She must feed it, keep it
\n clean, keep it healthy and
\n keep it’s body and soul
\n growing.
\n On hearing its cry, she
\n must make instant
\n judgments of what is the
\n matter. No one is in a better
\n position to know.
\n Sometimes she must
\n suppress a selfish urge to
\n rush to its side, pick it up
\n and fondle it. On other
\n occasions she must do just
\n that – even when it is not
\n convenient or when it is
\n difficult.
\n As children grow she must
\n change, adapting not only to
\n the changes and moods of
\n her offspring, but to the
\n changes and moods of the
\n environment in which that
\n child is growing.
\n She carries much of the
\n responsibility of teaching
\n the child. At first the child
\n leams almost entirely from
\n her. Even in school when the
\n child is formally taught by
\n others, it is often the mother
\n who encourages, chides,
\n helps, and supports him in
\n preparing for his own adult
\n life,
\n Throughout infant years,
\n childhood days and
\n adolescence, she is virtually
\n compelled to do things few
\n if any other person would do
\n for a fellow human being.
\n To her, midnight illnesses
\n are no impusitions. To her,
\n problems, disappointments
\n and tragedies are burdens
\n which must be shared – the
\n impact of which are as great
\n or perhaps greater than they
\n are to the child.
\n Her rewards for a
\n lifetime of caring, of
\n cleaning, of teaching, of
\n worrying, of enduring
\n unkindnesses’?
\n Mainly the vicarious thrill
\n of watching her child
\n succeed and be happy.
\n And perhaps – if she’s
\n lucky – a hug, a kiss, a
\n favor, a treat, and a
\n smathering of recognition
\n along the way.
\n So They Say
