{"id":86,"date":"1972-05-29T18:07:51","date_gmt":"1972-05-30T01:07:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gashler.com\/nlc\/?p=86"},"modified":"2014-06-13T17:07:24","modified_gmt":"2014-06-14T00:07:24","slug":"memorial-day-rites-conducted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gashler.com\/nlc\/?p=86","title":{"rendered":"Memorial Day Rites Conducted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gashler.com\/nlc\/scans\/Provo_History\/Article_PartX_012.jpg\"><img style=\"margin: 12px;\" src=\"http:\/\/gashler.com\/nlc\/default_thm.jpg\" alt=\"Click to see original image\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Cemeteries were banked with flowers today as Central Utahns joined\u00a0in a Memorial Day observance that had its beginnings in America a century ago.<\/p>\n<p>As at Arlington and other\u00a0national cemeteries, emphasis was given to honoring the men and women who served their country in war-time &#8211;\u00a0especially the war dead.<\/p>\n<p>In some cemeteries veterans&#8217; graves were decorated with small American Flags, but floral tributes had no bounds insofar as war service\u00a0was concerned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>New Monument<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among the communities\u00a0which held special observances &#8211; ceremonies, programs, band concerts, military rites &#8211; Provo stood out this\u00a0year because of dedicatory\u00a0services for a new granite monument to veterans.<\/p>\n<p>The speaker was Dr. Edwin (Eddie) Peterson of Logan, a native Provoan, professor at USU, and former national vice commander of the American Legion.<\/p>\n<p>The bunting-bedecked\u00a0stand stood near the monument erected by the Veterans Council, Veterans Memorial\u00a0Board, and Provo City &#8220;in memory\u00a0of those who have gone to their reward in the service of their country, and of all who served.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong> Veterans&#8217; Crosses<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Names of all veterans\u00a0buried in the cemetery\u00a0and the way in which each\u00a0served are inscribed on the white crosses lined in rows near the monument.<\/p>\n<p>As s future of the dedication, a copper receptacle filled\u00a0with records, special newspapers, brochures,\u00a0and histories of the Provo veterans organizations\u00a0was prepared\u00a0for sealing inside the monument\u00a0for 46 years until the 100th anniversary of the World War I Armistice in the year\u00a02018. (See story Page 16)<\/p>\n<p>A half-hour\u00a0concert by the Tintic High School band preceded the program. The band, directed by Ronald M. Griggs, has won many honors and trips for its excellence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Touching\u00a0Ceremony<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mayor Verl G. Dixon gave the dedicatory\u00a0prayer and George E. Larsen the innovation. In a touching ceremony,\u00a0a wreath\u00a0was placed on the granite memorial by\u00a0a\u00a0Gold Star mother, Mrs. Burns B. Riggs, whose\u00a0son Neil Riggs\u00a0paid the supreme\u00a0price in the Vietnam war.<\/p>\n<p>The Ute Post 2162\u00a0Veterans of Foreign Wars, handled the flagraising\u00a0ceremony and the impressive military\u00a0salute and sounding of &#8220;Taps&#8221; which\u00a0concluded the program. The program was emceed by N.
