Central Utahns Qualified For Supreme Court Post

Click to see original imageA Judicial Nominating Committee is accepting applications for a post on the Utah Supreme Court and it is hoped full consideration will be given qualified lawyer – jurists from Central Utah. (Leroy).Tuckett, who has submitted his resignation from the supreme court effective Aug. 31, was residing in Provo and serving as a judge of the Fourth Judicial District when he was appointed to the high court in 1966. He since has moved to Salt Lake City. Aside from Mr. Tuckett, all of the jurists,-on the supreme court are Hom Sat Lake County – Henri Henriod, chief justice, A.H. Ellett, J. Allan Crickett, and Richaql-Maughn. W Mr. Maughn is from Bountiful but had his law practice in Salt Lake City prior to his election to the court. Mr. Tuckett was a Fourth District judge for more than 17 years prior to his appointment to the supremem court, and had a long record in the legal profession before that. He declined in an interview to designate which supreme court cases he felt were the most important. “All f of them are mighty important to the litigants,” he said, “and that’s the way we’ve tried to regard them.” Mr. Tuckett will be at the c0urt’s retirement age next year, but decided to leave the post earlier, after 10 years of service. The next year or two will see a big change in the personnel of the supreme court. Justice Henriod has indicated he will retire next January. Both Jusitces Ellett and Crockett will be at ages for mandatory retirement soon. Applications for the vacancy being created by Mr. Tuckett’s coming retirement will be received until Aug. 20 at the office of Allan Mecham, supreme court clerk in Salt Lake City. The commission will present Gov. Calvin Rampton with three names, and the governor will appoint one to fill the vacancy. Here in Central Utah, there are some well qualified lawyer – judges.
