From Philadelphia comes the report that federal marshals are seizing cars of people who allegedly have reneged on college loans. Within a few days 17 autos were impounded, including “a few Cadillacs, a Lincoln Continental and a Porsche,” UPI quoted Assistant U. S. Attorney Virginia Powel as saying. That’s tough on the owners and sad that it’s necessary. But people who obtain govemment loans need to know this is business and loans need to be paid back according to agreement. In Los Angeles, said another news account, 90 geople have been charged y federal prosecutors in civil complaints totaling $270,000 in unpaid loans. “Too many get the idea you don’t have to repay these loans and nothing will happen to you,” said U. Among the defendants are corporate executives, lawyers, a doctor, a network sportscaster and others presumably capable of paying back money guaranteed by the government so they could attend college and qualify themselves. Of the 90 suits, 59 are against persons who obtained government-insured loans through the Department of Education. The others involve Veterans Administration education loans and Small Business Administration loans. The debt collection drive is to be expanded across the country. Besides filing civil suits and taking over cars, prosecutors are pursuing such procedures as legal atghment of wgg, bank accounts and other lpersonal property, according to Powel.
