Distinguished Utah Jurist

Click to see original imageJoseph E. Nelson, whose funeral services will be held Monday in Spanish Fork, achieved hallmarks in the field of law and jurisprudence seldom noted here in Central Utah. District judge for 27 years until his retirement, juvenile judge, Spanish Fork city attorney, and practicing lawyer – these are titles which won Judge Nelson a wide and honorable reputation in his chosen field. The distinction he achieved as a jurist can be gauged by offices to which he was named by his colleagues, including: President, Utah State Integrated Bar Associationi (elected twice); president, Utah District Judges Association; and member, Utah Bar Commission. Judge Nelson was known for his scholarly, analytical mind, his knowledge of the law, and his judicial temperament. In his administration of justice he was human, compassionate, understanding; yet he displayed courage in izjpholding the law and in keeping e court free of outside influences. “A judge,” he once wrote. “must do his work without fear or reprisal or hope of reward.” Expanding on his philosophy, he added: “Justice demands undeviating adherence to moral standards…The court must be a refuge from danger and tyranny. a haven for the oppressed and the poor, a citadel of truth and liberty.” Repeatedly – in public addresses, in his writings. and in private utterances – Judge Nelson expressed a deep feeling for his country and concern that the American way of life be preserved. In part, his patriotism stemmed from service in World War I and in veterans organizations through the years. Among other titles, he was an American Legion post commander; executive national committeeman for the Legion; and more recently. commander of the World War I Veterans organization in Utah County. His writings dealt with subjects of Americanism, education (he was a school teacher early in his career), juvenile problems, and legal themes. Many of his poems appeared in this newspaper through the years. In paying tribute to Jud e Nelson and his life of service, tge Herald also joins with his many friends and associates in extending sympathy and condolences to his family.
