New Public Safety Building

Click to see original imagePleasant Grove’s city hall built in 1939-40 as a WPA project – is a long way from being adequate for all services of the growing city now housed within its walls. Thus, the announcement of a government grant of a $432,500 for a new public safety and court building is good news. The allocation was made by the Economic Development Administration. The new 6500-square-foot building will be erected at about First East and First South, partyly through the block from the existing city hall. This would put it in reasonably close proximity to the city center Pleasant Grove ultimately hopes to develop in the area of the old junior high school, Basically, the new structure will house police and court functions. The fire department will remain at the head of Main Street and the present city hall will continue to house municipal offices – city council, city recorder, utilities, etc. Currently the police department is especially cramped, In the new building, which is expected to be ready for bid in March, will be a dispatch center, polygraph room, shorttime holding cells, interrogation rooms, officers work room, and lounge for use of the public and officers. There will also be quarters for juvenile detention and a room for a juvenile officer; also court facilities including a courtroom, judge’s chambers, court clerk office, and attorney-client conference room. The improvement was l1ighlyrecommended by the National Clearing House for Criminal Justice Planning and Architecture, a federal agency, in its survey of present facilities. Withal, the new building project will “fill a vital need and amount to a good addition to public facilities of Pleasant Grove.
