Neighborhood Meetings

Click to see original imageOfficials of Provo City and the Provo School District are to be commended for recent steps to encourage citizen participation in their rmdings. The city commission has lamched a program to take sorre of their meetings – two per month on the present schedule – to the people by meeting in the various neighborhoods. Commixioners started out cn the BYU area and their rreeting attracted a very simblecrowd. Their next neighborhood rreeting was for the Little Rock Canyon area in the Fdgemont School. More than lillpersors attended. These tumouts must be omsidered excellent in the light attendance at regular dty commission meetings. Public apathy being what it is. many meetings go almost unattended except for persons with bisiness on the agenda. City officials conduct regular city business at the neighborhood sessions. which are held on Tuesday nights in lim the regularly – scheduled rreeting on that night at the citycenter. in addition, people of the neighborhoods are invited to bring their questions and their problems for discussion. The next neighborhood rreding will be Tuesday, Feb. 24 at the Edgemont School, with residents of the Edgemont area especially invited. Under the meeting fomiat. exhibits open at 6 p.m. A multi-media presentation ising slides will start at 7 o’clock, and the regular city oormiission meeting begins at 7:30. Prior to the fom1al activities citizens will have opportunity to mingle with commissioners and department heads. ‘lhe Provo School Board, in a similar move. has scheduled a special meeting for Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the district dfims. 280 W. 940 N. with a gnal of informing the citizenry cn wiool district operations. ‘lhiswillbeaquestiomandanswer session. A letter to parents notifying them of the meeting and soliciting qtmtions and topics to be aired was sent home with school children last week. The board plans to give priority to those topics submitted prior to Tuesday. The meeting. it is intended. will be the first of additional board sessions worked into the wredule on a quarterly basis. The idea is especially good since the school board holds regular meetings only once a rmnthnormally. N Gty and school officials have planned these meetings with the idea of making it easier for people to get informed and to offer their irpm into city and school affairs. ‘Ihe Herald applauds the effort to bring the program to the people.
