They were just small items – but there were three of them grouped fairly-close together, all on the same page of the Herald. Each was about a burglary here in Utah County. An auto stereo-tape deck was stolen in Provo Canyon a silver belt buckle worth $300 from a private home in Highland and tools valued at over $3000 were taken from a repair shop in Orem, These are examples of a despicable type of crime which is being perpetrated in the Provo – Utah County area. A crackdown is needed by police – and by the public, too. The public? Over and over people are too trusting, leaving cans unlocked or valuable merchandise (such as tape decks and CB radios) in plain sight in locked vehicles. Many folks leave-their homes open, never dreaming anyone would be so dishonest as to commit burglary – until they return and find thieves have made a major haul. Automobiles aren’t hard to get into if,the motivation is there for the burglar. Don’t tempt a thief by leaving merchandise in the car whether it’s parked downtown or in your carport. He probably has no scruples about smashing a car window, If you buy a C.B. radio, stereo or other car equipment that is removable, take time to remove it at night. If you have a garage for your car, use it – and lock the door. How about your home? Some people still say with satisfaction that they never lock their homes. in these days that simply isn’t being smart, Have good locks on your doors and use them, Be sure windows are locked. Be suspicious of anyone who might be “casing” your place. When you go away, let your neighbors know so they can report suspicious actions to police. Home and business burglaries, even though they may not be headline news, can amount to big losses. And your burglary, the one down the street, and the whole string of them in the community may cost you extra money by pushing the insurance rates up. In some cases, stolen merchandise is recovered, but the owner can’t always be located. No serial numbers, no markings, no means of identification. Provo Police Chief Swen Nielsen says his department will be glad to loan Provo folks an electric marking device for recording their social security numbers on valuable merchandise. Serial numbers might be removed; but a good marking job stays. Burglary losses – home, car, business, shop, etc. can be curtailed. Make yourself part of a badlyneeded crackdown against the low-grade citizens who steal. So They Suy “The right of the farm workers to vote for the iunion of their choice will be written in concrete and not (be left) to the whim of the legislature.” – United Farm Workers president Cesar Chavez criticizing CaIifornia’s governing body for its failure to fund a state agricultural board that would oversee free elections for farm workers.
