City, county and school officials and others invited to the “Elks Involvement in the Community Program” the other night came away with a better and broader view of the workings of Elkdom. Indeed, one could hardly have listened to the various reports without being impressed with the community service performed by the 1700member Provo Lodge 849. Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity – these are the four cardinal principles of Elkdom stressed in the lodge’s rituals and service creed. From the broad scope of charitable and humanitarian projects reported by committee chairmen, the Provo Elks are doing a good job of carrying out thse goals. Between 1880 and 1974, Elks on a national basis have given about $285330,000 to charities The figure totaled $12,484,000 last year alone – and during that year the Provo Lodge ranked fourth among the more than 2100 lodges in charitable contributions per capita besides ranking first in the state. Community involvement projects of the Provo Elks include Americanism and patriotic activities, a gigantic Christmas charity ef ort, supporting the Girl Scouring movement, providing tanned leather for hospitalized veterans’ handicraft project, major assistance to handicapped or others in need, recognition of peace officers for outstanding law enforcement, youth activities, flag presentations, and help for the alcohol recovery center. The Elks’ new lodge on South University Avenue is a credit to the community and is used by a number of civic groups from time to time. Withal, we believe the organimtion deserves a vote of appreciation for its community involvement, generosity, and humanitarian service.
