The upsurge of growth which has characterized Orem in the past few decades is continuing, according to a report by City manager Albert E. Haines to the Chamber of Commerce. Orem, said the manager, has an estimated 41,000 population and accounts for 35 per cent of the county’s housing starts. He also declared Orem is responsible for 36 per cent of new construction. In both the housing starts and new construction the Orem percentage exceeded Provo’s, according to Mr. Haines’ report. The city’s sales tax receipts for the recent quarter in Orem were 22 per cent higher than the same period last year. Population-wise, Orem’s growth is second only to that of Sandy in Utah, the Chamber of Commerce was told. The estimated 41,000 figure is up from the 25,000 of 1970. Growth brings problems in providing municipal services. This amounts to a major challenge for Orem City officials. It’s a problem shared in various degrees by other communities of the area. With no end in sight for the expansion, the problem apparently is something our cities must learn to live with on a permanent basis.
