School started today in the Provo and Alpine Districts – and in other sectors of Central Utah the youngsters will be heading back to the classroom within a week or less. There’s a message in this announcement for all motorists: Be doubly careful and d0n’t risk the possibility of hitting a child. Give a kid a break and a brake, as the old slogan goes. The “be careful” message applies both ways, of course. Children should adhere to pedestrian rules and stay with the sidewalks, using only regular crosswaiks if possible. They should exercise prudence and caution at all times. Parents should give detailed instructions to youngsters – especially those going to school for the first time. Motorists should be especially mindful of laws governing school buses. Generally traffic going either direction is to stop when the red lights of the bus are flashing unless there’s a barrier separating traffic. If a barrier exists, then only the traffic going the same direction of the bus need stop. Let’s make it a safe year traffic-wise, with no accidents to mar the return to school.
