‘Vusco M. Tanner Day’

Click to see original imageIn the long relationship between Brigham Young University and the Provo community, Dr, Vasco M. Tanner has been one of the most consistent practitioners of the “town and gown” philosophy of joint service and cooperation. It was fitting that the city commission proclaimed a “Vasco M. Tanner Day” to tie in with Wednesday’s program at the Rock Canyon flood control dam marking the Prov0an’s 35year tenure as chairman of the forestry and flood control committee of the Provo Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Tanner was paid many tributes for his leadership in conservation work. In a follow-up activity, a field trip over forest and flood control projects is planned Aug, 18. Dr. Tanner was chairman of the department zoology and entomology at BYU from 1925 until 1958 and continued in other capacities afterward until retirement. I-Ie is now president of the ‘Y’ Emeritus Club. During all his BYU yea-rs he was associated with one project or another in the community. A booster for municipal power, he has served since the fall of 1939 on the city utilities board, chairman the past two decades. For four years he was a member of the Utah State Parks and Recreation Commission. His civic work has included three years as national president of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers. Earlier in his career he was founder and editor of the Great Basin Naturalist, a scientific quarterly, for 30 years, r Deep satisfaction comes from a busy life and from serving. others, says Dr. Tanner, It’s a double compensation, because the people certainly have benefited from his leadership and service.
