What can citizens in general do to help honor America on its upcoming Bicentennial birthday. For one thing they can display their American flags as part of a nationwide ”21-day salute” June 14 through July 4. The “Honor America” project is being spearheaded by the American Historic and Cultural Society Inc. of which a former Utahn, J. Willard Marriott, is chairman. The society has the backing of Congress, the Senate and House having passed a joint resolution June 13, 1975 declaring the 21 days from Flag Day to Independence Day as a “period to honor America” and urging tl1at there be public gatherings and activities at which the geople can celebrate and onor their country in an appropriate manner. One such activity encouraged by the society is display of e flag every darly, June 14 through July 4. he Honor America Committee headed by Mr. Marriott cites an interesting historical parallel: “Since 1876 our country’s presidential salute has called for the discharge of 21 guns. The American custom was adopted from the British, not only by the United States but by many other nations as the highest national honor, so that the 21-gun salute is now a widespread international practice. “So arises a unique opportunity for every American personally to dedicate the Flag Day-July Fourth interval as a 21-day salute to the flag and country. The grand climax of the Bicentennial celebration will fall on a Sabbath weekend, July 4t.h being a Simday.” The Herald will be reporting many Central Utah activities associated with the patriotic period celebrations, Flag Day programs, flag poles erected, band concerts, etc. There may not be a specifically assigned role in the over-all program for everyone, but certainly all who desire can participate by displaying a flag. We urge Central Utahns to get prepared for this. Purchase a flag now if you don’t have one. And make the necessary arrangements to display it in front of your premises and in a proper manner. We also encourage display of the flagl by government units, sc ools and others, as appwgriate. Asthe poet Walt itman said, “…this America is only you and me.” Let all Americans involve themselves in one way or another in the program to make this country’s Bicentennial birthday the best ever.
