This is a time to be extra careful on the streets. This applies, of course, to motorists. But it also applies to pedestrians including thousands of school kids who are returning to school in the days ahead after summer vacation. It’s estimated that more than 42,000 students from kindergarten through 12th grade will be returning to the classroom in the school districts of Utah, Juab and Wasatch Counties. A great many of these will be walking; others will travel by private car; and many will ride in buses. Whatever the mode of travel, more pressure will be put on traffic, and chances of accident will be increased. Extra safety on everyone’s part, however, can go a long way in accident prevention. Motorists should drive a little slower, carefully observe the school zone regulations, stop for buses when this is required by the regulations. School youngsters likewise need to display extra care and courtesy. In the case of the small ones children going to school for the first time; parents should be extra patient and diligent in explaining the -trafflc rules and especially the precautions pedestrians should take. Sometimes there may be a question on who has the right-of-way – the motorist or the pedestrian. On this point we have this bit of advice: Don’t quibble and d0n’t press your viewpoint if there’s potential danger. Let courteous, careful conduct be the guideline so that safety will prevail. Again, this is the time for double effort in safety. Let’s make it a happy and safe opening of school.
