Time to Count Blessings

Once again we celebrate this truly American holiday – and don’t ask the question: “What is there to be thankful for?”

True, we have problems on the national and international scenes and here at home in Utah.

There’s turmoil, global disunity, economic problems. Hatred, crime, and violence are more prevalent than we’d like. We have the energy crisis and seemingly one crisis upon another.

But the cynics who see only the bad might well take stock of what’s right with America… and with our state and local communities.

For one thing, the vast majority of people are praying and striving for peace. For every breaker of the law there are thousands who respect and obey it.

For every weakness in our country there’s a strength. America still has the inherent ability to heal internal and international differences and stand united in the face of common danger.

In spite of evidences of greed, the welfare of the public is a vital concern and anyone taking inventory can find countless examples of mankind’s charity and compassion for those in need.

America is still a land of abundance. Although the challenges in our time may be great… as they have been in every other generation… so are the opportunities. Let’s give thanks today and every day.
