Reagan Success Our Success

Click to see original image“To me, the symbol of our country is the presidency of the United States. When a president succeeds, the country succeeds. If a president fails, the country fails.” These words by Democrat Abraham Ribicoff, highly respected three – term U. S. Senator from Connecticut, . prefaced a call he made for .bipartisan support for President – Elect Ronald Reagan, a Republican. Ribicoff, who chose to retire at conclusion of this term, made the remarks while responding to tributes paid him by colleagues before leaving on a trip to Europe. “We may have our differences, philosophically and politically, with whomever may be the president,” Ribicoff said, “But I have always felt that a U. S. senator, consistent with his own beliefs and philosophy, should do everything he possibly can to make an American president succeed. Not only is t.he future of our country at stake, but the future of the entire world.” The former Connecticut Governor and U. S. Congressman said the presidency becomes more complicated each day and congressional support is vital for the benefit of the country. “I liked President Carter,” he commented. “I respected him and worked with him. But nothing is permanent in life or in politics, and the people have expressed their will. I know we in this body and in this country wish the president-elect a successful administration.” Ribicoff’s remarks were timely and appropriately in keeping with the spirit of America’s two-party system. Democratic congressional leaders have joined in pledging a “honeymoon” period of “no criticism” to help Reagan to a good start. As Ribicoff suggested, a president’s success is the country’s success. Active. meaningful cooperation from Congress, others in government leadership, and the public itself can help achieve goals common to all.
