Flood Prevention Steps Vital

Click to see original imageUtah Valley experienced some destructive flooding earlier this week – and authorities involved should devise preventive measures to avoid recurrence where possible, The Goshen Dam in southern Utah County broke, causing severe highway flooding and washouts plus flooded basements. Flooding west of Pleasant Grove along the Proctor Lane inundated some homes, barns, pastures and roads. .In Provo and Orem there were some flooded basements, garages and yards, with attendant damage. Homeowners, firemen and others involved in the emergency areas blamed part of the problem to heavy rains combined with still-frozen ground that w0uldn’t absorb the extra moisture. However, other problems and deficiencies also tumed up. These should be corrected expeditiously, Included were p ugged-up drainage ditches, a county culvert below Pleasant Grove reportedly with too-little capacity, erosion and housing development-related problems, gutters too small to handle the flow, some possible engineering inadequacies, etc. An investigation should be made of the Goshen Dam problem to determine steps necessary for modernization and to insure safety. In northeast Provo, considerable water apparently came off foothills housing development areas, Are measures being required to insure adequate drainage here? Water seems to flow in broad patches across the new 650 East road. Are curbs and gutters adequate? Are there enough drains? Now is the time to examine all problems associated with the looding. Inconvenience and liability should be averted if possible in potential flood situations.
