Citizen Responsibility In Provo-Orem Election

Click to see original imageVoters of Provo and Orem will go to the polls May 23 to decide whether a quarter-cent sales tax should be approved to fund a mass transit system in the two-city area. The date is less than two weeks away. You, the citizenry of the two communities, have the responsibility for making the decision. Are you ready for the task? ‘n recent weeks – since Orem J Provo officials called the election following presentations by the Timpanogos Transit Authority – the Herald has published many articles to keep the public abreast of developments as they have taken place. In case you “came in late,” so to speak, and haven’t been keeping up on the issue, you may desire to read and clip for future reference a series of articles on the proposed bus system which begins today on the front page of this newspaper. Our intent will be to give an over-all picture of the mass transit proposal, highlights in the history of the movement, the extent of coverage planned, financing (local and federal), the proposed administrative setup, jobs to be created, proposed fares, an explanation of the proposition as it will appear on the ballot, etc. Do you have some specific questions you’d like answered? We do not, of course, regard the series as all-encompassing and wish to encourage the citizenry to augment their understanding of the proposal and the issues involved through every available means. While the public has had opportunity to attend information sessions in the past, we strongly recommend that the authorities in charge hold at least one welladvertised public meeting in Provo and one in Orem. Essential information could be outlined at that time ; and, importantly, ample time should be allocated for questions from the people. The Herald would be happy to give wide before and after coverage of such meetings. There is no time to lose in getting informed as to need, the specific proposal, the funding plan and all the other details so that regardless of the stance you take, you can vote with purpose and conviction May 23.
