Provo City’s “Beautification Week” has ended – but the task of cleaning up and beautifying is never-ending and should be continued on an individual family basis. This applies also to other communities of Central Utah. A mid-summer beautification drive is a good idea, providing impetus, as it does, for eliminating weeds and other undesirable growth and tidying up the downtown and residential areas. Provo’s cleanup and beautification drive promoted considerable activity, as demonstrated during an Aug. 6 awards night when various individuals and groups including Boy Scout troops were cited for their efforts. The Women’s Chamber of Commerce beautification committee spearheaded the event. The Provo City Commission wound up the week with a statement calling on private individuals to continue the effort eipecially in weed abatement, ” ach property owner must take personal responsibility for the maintenance of his property,” the commissions statement said. And that’s the key to a well-kept and beautiful city – individual responsibility and civic pride. eed-grown lots, parking strips, irrigation ditchbanks, and fence lines continue to detract from the city’s image. Indeed, they can amount to a damaging blot on a neighborhood. A well-known Utah County planner has said weed-grown lots can actually decrease property values in a given area. Provo has an ordinance that permits the city to send in a crew and clean up a weed-grown lot if the owner refuses to respond to wamings. The cost of the cleanup is billed to the property owner or becomes a lien on the property. Two weed abatement crews are on duty this summer and so far have cleaned 34 lots found to bein violation. The Herald considers this a good ordinance and urges the city to press its enforcement when citizens refuse to respond voluntarily or after being notified. Beautification, however, covers many facets aside from weed eradication. Cleaning, painting, elimination of junker automobiles, pruning, keeping lawns green, growing flowers these and other activities by the citizenry can go a long way in making a city clean and attractive.
