Humphrey had visited Utah many times and addressed a Brigham Young University assembly in Provo Oct. 21, 1966 while he was vice president. The memory of the “Hapgy Warrior,” who had been in e forefront of American politics for many years, will live on because of the deep impression he made in his public career. “HHH,” as he was often called, barely missed becoming president in 1968, losing in a close election to Richard M. Nixon. He openly ran for president in 1960, 1968, and 1972 and played a part in the elections of 1964 and 1976. He was vice president to President Lyndon B. Johnson 1965-1968. First elected a U.S. Senator in 1948, he returned to the Senate in 1970 and last year was made deputy president pro tempore, a post created especially in his honor. He propelled himself into national focus early in his political career as a Democratic liberal and strong advocate of civil and human rights. In more recent years he turned to the promise of full employment through the “Humphrey Hawkins” bill – a highly controversial measure – but died in the midst of the effort. Whether people agreed with his political positions or not, most admired him for his human qualities. He was a real gentleman, a fine orator, and a man who fought for what he believed. His death brought tributes from at home and abroad. Memorial rites were attended by President Carter and two former presidents, Mr. Nixon and Gerald R. Ford. The widow of President Johnson summed up the feeling of many: “Our family loved Hubert Humphrey. He taught this country a lot about living and loving, and in the end, about dying.” In life the “Happy Warrior” earned a world – wide reputation as one of the important men of his era. In his passing he leaves a deep imprint and some hallmarks that will be a reminder of his contribution for a long time to come.
