Second West Street – a volume traffic thoroughfare north from Twelfth North to the University Parkway (BYU Diagonal) intersection – needs sidewalks. When the road was brought to present standard a number of years ago, it’s doubtful the present serious need for sidewalks was envisioned. Since then a half-dozen eating houses have been established on the route – and just this fall a large apartment complex opened north of the Diagonal. All these have helped to increase foot traffic, with pedestrians having to find their own paths sometimes dangerously on the highway, sometimes through weeds on parking strips, or over private property. Currently, on the west side of the street, sidewalk extends about a block along the Church Chicken and apartments property off Twelfth North. On northward there are two short stretches – in front of the Herald and the Big-0 Tires. On the east side, there is sidewalk in front of Arctic Circle and the surface is blackto ped much of the distance soutg to Twelfth North. Curbing and other structures along the stretch of property occupied by the U.S. Amiy Reserve on the west side have just been removed. There were hopes by pedestrians that the sidewalk was to be extended here – but instead the strip has been grassed-over. As the busy Second West continues to be built up, it will become increasingly difficult and expensive to install walks. We believe Provo City officials should act now to plan a sidewalk project to fill growing need and move ahead of the additional growth that is sure to come.
