When you read or hear the ominous-sounding figures on unemployment, you are only getting part of the story – the gloomy side. The good news is that more American workers are working than ever before. in America’s history. And that goes for the situation right here in Utah County where the employment picture is far better than in the nation as a whole. Nation-wide there are about ‘ 81.1 million Americans working. The national unemployment rate as of January was 7.9 per cent. As Paul Harvey eiaplains it, the seeming para ox of more ”employment” and more “unemployment” at the same time results from nothing more complicated than the fact there are more of us. Says the columnist; “The normal population increase plus immigration, legal and illegal, has caused our population to mushroom.” He notes further that the total number of unemployed – about 7,760,000 – is approximately the same number as the 8 million persons who are presently in the So They Say ”1 just didn’t think it was very appropriate. 1 had an outstanding Secretary of State and I just didn’t feel there was any need for it.” -Former President Ford explaining that he had never called former President Richard Nixon for advice in running the country. “1’ve always heard about the advice and consent role of the Congress. It wasn’t always this way, but tmemployment ‘figures for Utah ‘ are far more o timistic than nationally, Pfoday the “seasonally-adjusted” jobless rate for this state is at 5.6 per cent. 1t’s even better in Utah County. The seasonally-adjusted unemployment percentage for January was only 4.8 per cent, while the percentage using the “raw figures” was at 6 per cent, according to Job Service statistics, “Seasonally-adjusted” simply means, in essence, that workers normally idle at a particular time (for example, construction people in certain winter months) are exempted in computing the percentages. For January, Utah Gounty’s total labor force was figured at 68,081, with only 4102 unemployed. A whopping 63,979 in this county were working – self-employed or in agricultural or non-agricultural jobs. The total was a little higher in December (66,065) mostly because of building payrolls in the pre-Christmas shopping period in the retail trade. Just how far Utah County has come in the last decade in job development is indicated by the fact that the 1966 labor force in the county totaled 39,220, according to Job Service figures. Unemployment was at 4,360 for a non-adjusted percentage of 11.1. Employment officials in the county are pleased with the present situation which they characterize as excellent. We echo their appraisal. When population increases as rapidly as it has done in Utah Coimty in the past decade and the employment picture improves markedly in the same period, you have to conclude that the job development pace has been excellent. It’s a situation we can feel good about and hope will continue.
