Utah County has an important tourist attraction in the Timpanogos Cave National Monument, accessible from American Fork Canyon. There are many other fine points of interest, of course. But the cave, with its visitors center and guide service, is a spot where tourists can enjoy a rewarding experience seeing this “different” attraction. The annual ‘1’imp Cave report indicated 191,312 visitors toured the facility in 1976 – a 20 per cent increase from the 159,062 for 1975. That’s a healthy increase, Actually the total would have been greater had the cave not been closed in early October for a construction project. Two rockfall hazard barriers were partially completed before inclement weather shut down construction for the winter months The cave is located on the north shoulder of the Timpanogos mountain, and can be reached via a brisk hike up a well-kept trail from the office at the floor of the canyon, While the Timpanogos Cave isn’t as big- as some other caverns in the West, it has stalactities, stalagmites and other features of rare beauty, wellworth the trip. Since the climb, cave tour, and descent require only a few hours, there is plenty of time for the visitor to also take the beautiful Alpine Scenic Loop (connecting American Fork and Provo Canyons) if he starts fairly early in the day. The cave is closed now, of course, for the winter. When it opens next spring, probably late in May, we highly recommend a visit for Central Utahns as well as tourists.
