School’s starting again, Mr. Motorist. And that being the case, we make this appeal to you: Slow down ; keep a close lookout ; and give the kids a break – or maybe we should spell it brake! Sure, you may be in a hurry, and you have your rights. But regardless of the speed limit or who has the right-of-way, take it easy if there are small children going to or from school youngsters who may be inexperiencedlin the ways of the pedestrian. A little boy or girl, trusting the big folks who drive cars and unaware of all the dangers, just might dart across the street at the wrong time. With thousands of children in the role of pedestrians now, the accident danger has multiplied and everyone involved has extra responsibility for safety. You parents especially have an added duty. Teach your children safe practices what they should and should not do. Acquaint them with the basic laws and the need for being careful. Caution them to use the sidewalks and crosswalks and to keep a sharp lookout. The beginning of school is a time for challenge and happiness. Let’s not let it be marred by tragedy.
