Fact: This is “Beautification Mon’th,” proclaimed by the Utah County Commission. Question: What are you doing about it’? Obviously, for any beautification and cleanup campaign to achieve results, the populace must get behind it. Some of the cities are giving citizens a hand by putting extra manpower and trucks into hauling trash away. For example, Provo’a annual city-wide spring cleanup is cheduled May 14-21. American Fork, with city crews and National Guard facilities combining, will haul away rubbish this Saturday and Sunday. Lehi is having a similar cleanup operation this weekend, with the trucks due as early as 6 a.m. We encourage citizens to check with their local cities throughout the area. Preparation is the key word for a successful cleanup. The truck operation must be reasonably thorough – but the real key is for the property owners to be ready, with trash, limbs, and whatnot boxed and bundled at the curb. In Provo, the trash pickups will be on the regularly-scheduled days. Sanitation, streets and parks department personnel will provide dump trucks and loading equipment to remove refuse which normally would not be taken because of size or other reasons. Nearly everything, including old automobiles, will be accepted. But if an old car is involved. you will need to call the city sanitation department for special instructions and arrangements. Cleanup is only one phase of Beautication Month. Don’t forget the planting, the painting, needed repairs. remodeling etc. Pruning, too, And don’t forget those ugly branches that extend beyond the property line onto or over the sidewalk, Be sure to trim them back. Make a special project of vacant lots. Weed-grown areas are quite common in communities throughout the area. Without attention, they become eye sores that can depreciate the value of entire neighborhoods. Let’s mobilize now, before it’s too late, and make the spring beautification drive really significant.
