Spirit of cc; Faith in Provo

Click to see original imageMembership in the Chamber of Commerce is a way of saying. ”1 believe in Provo.” This catch-line from a talk by Ward Heal. new president. seemed to portray the spirit of the incoming officers at the Provo Chamber of’ Commerce installation banquet the other night. Mr. Heal took the reins from outgoing President Delbert ll. (Debi Warner. The two men. in true Chamber of Commerce character. praised Provo as “a beautiful city,” “a great place to live,” and a community of “people working together.” indeed there was a splendid show of harmony between Chamber of Commerce and Provo City as Mayor Russell D. Grange took part in the ceremonies, presenting C. of C. service awards to seven citizens of the community. with a fitting tribute to each. BYU also was wellrepresented. with E. Doyle Robison, director of the Skaggs institute of Retail Management at the “Y’ serving as keynote speaker and outlining vistas in merchandising. l’rovo’s Chamber of Commerce of today has basically the same goals as the original C. of C. organized here in 1887 with Wilson ll. Dusenberry as president and with such illustrious names on the roster as Reed Smoot tlater a United States senatorl and George Sutherland, who became a U.S. Supreme Court justice. in general terms the purposes of the voluntary organization are to meet the community’s needs. especially in advancing the commercial, financial. industrial. and civic interests of the city.A good chamber of commerce is a civic clearing house, a public relations agency of the community, a legislative representative, an information bureau, and a medium for research and promotion. With all the enthusiasm exhibited at the installation dinner. the new officers face major problems in building membership and in stimulating volunteers to work energetically for the specific projects undertaken by the C. of C. A bigger membership is needed; some committees need to redonble their efforts. The new president put his finger on one special challenge in his speech 7 mobilizing professional people as well as business and industrial firms and individuals in the cause. Everyone benefits from the Chamber of Commerce’s efforts re business. doctors. lawyers, dentists. education, industries. All firms or individuals who share a common interest in community growth and improvement are eligible for inembcrship. The executive committee and board of directors pretty much set the policies, but essentially the work is done through committees e and this calls for active, intelligent. willing leadership by men and women who believe in progress. ‘1’hrough the years, the Chamber of Commerce – with the cooperation of Provo City and many groups and individuals has compiled an impressive record of accomplishment. The original C. of C. of 1887 was discontinued some time in the 1890s. but it was reorganized early in the 1900s as the Commercial Club and reconstituted in 1921 pretty much as it exists today. ‘1’he name Chamber of Commerce was re-adopted in 1924. l As the C. of C. heads into a nei/I year. thanks are due to those w’ have served in the past. And ” certainly hoped the lb administration will receive munity support to matcX pledged leadership efforts.;
