Click to see original imageWater experts say Utah faces its worst drought on record – and some cities, including Provo, already have announced restrictions on outside watering. Effective May 1. Provo will restrict watering to evening hours at designated times for properties with odd and even numbered addresses. (See news story in local section.! The resolution adopted by the city commission make it a misdemeanor to violate the restrictions imposed. Orem, second largest city in Utah County, hasn’t ordered any specific restrictions yet, but has appealed to the citizenry to take voluntary water conservation measures. Interpreting what must be obvious to most people because of the skimpy snow fall this past season, water officials say careful water use is an absolute must. They further warn the crisis could intensify next year barring a reversal in the precipitation pattern, What it boils down to is that we the people, to protect our own water supplies, must voluntarily and conscientiously apply strict conservation measures. letting good judgment take over where actual restrictions end. This is something that applies to everyone. Voluntary compliance by all could be the difference in making existing water supplies last. Provo City has warned that even more stringent restrictions may be necessary if the rules imposed as of May 1 are not universally complied with. While the curbs announced thus far have to do only with outside watering. officials have stressed the need also to conserve in every water use: Flush the toilet less often; don’! over-use water from the shower, the wash basin faucet, the kitchen sink; don’t let the taps run open waiting for the water to cool; use less water for your baths; put a plastic container of water in your toilet tank to cut the volume of water re,quired to fill. Water conservation is everyone’s job – and all should put forth an effort, in the spirit of fairness and good citizenship. On the other hand, water experts need to watch the water situation carefully, keep the people abreast of conditions as they develop. Hopefully the situation will improve. but officials indicate it isn’t apt to in the absence of heavy snowpacks on the watersheds. Certainly we must put our reliance in those close to the problem and follow their advice. If everyone will do his part, vast quanities of water can be conserved – and that’s the name of the game this year. So They Say “You cannot talk seriously (about arms limitations) if you assume that Soviet intentions are equal to Soviet capabilities. This is paranoic thinking. When we talk about Soviet forces you must also keep in mind that we have our defense needs; not all our neighbors are friendly.” – Gene Gerasimov, editor of the Soviet news agency in Novosti.
