WiIson’s Success Story

Click to see original imageCongratulations are due a Utah County steelmaker who has risen to high-echelon ranking in the United States Steel Corporation. Dean G. Wilson. a native of Payson. has been appointed vice president of engineering for U.S. Steel, effective Sept. 1. Since January 1976 he has been general superintendent of the corporation’s Homestead (Pa.) Works. Mr. Wilson, who received his bachelor and master’s degrees at BYU and a doctorate in fuels engineering from University of Utah, began his steel-making career at Geneva Works. He became superintendent of the Geneva ammonia plant in 1964, and in two year was named division superintendent of coke and coal chemicals. A promotion or two later he became general superintendent of the Clairton Works in Pennsylvania in 1973, some three years prior to the Homestead appointment. Mr. Wilson is one of a number of native Utah County people who have achieved important rungs along the steel industry’s ladder ol’ success. To mention two of special note: A fellow native of Payson. Henry A. Huish. is general superintendent of Geneva Works, where he began his steel-making career years ago. Prior to being named to head the Geneva steel operation, Mr. Huish had served as assistant general superintendent here. and later as administrative assistant to the vice president for operations at U.S. Steel’s western division in San Francisco. The other ex-Geneva steelmaker we have in mind is L.K, Smith. a native of Lehi, now vice president and general manager of the Central Steel Division of U.S. Steel in Chicago. It is always good to see “home town” people named to high positions. Utah County can be proud of the above-mentioned trio for their uncommon achievements in the steel industry.
